She didn’t see me as a half-breed or even as the Moderator. She didn’t damn me or fear me for my powers, she accepted me. Even before she knew she was the princess. Being apart from her was more torture than the Shadow Realm could ever be.
When I had first arrived, it was Morgana who had found me passed out and leaning against a dead log. She had taken me to her home and taken care of my wound until I was well enough to get around on my own. If I had known that taking her help would mean that I owed her my affection in return, I would have rather rotted out there with the log. Instead, I was forced to have her as my constant shadow as I maneuvered the nightmare realm.
At first, I had wondered why it was called that when there wasn’t anything nightmarish about it at all. Perpetual night? All right, not a problem. No plant life or trickling streams. That would have been a problem had I not been Fae. I wouldn’t starve for a very long time. I planned to be out of here before that happened. Last but not least, was the annoying woman who would not take no for an answer. While that was unpleasant it wasn’t exactly nightmarish.
What was a nightmare were the mirrors. They were everywhere. Every step I took I ran into a mirror that showed me people and places I knew. I could see them, hear them, but they couldn’t see me. I’d been trying for weeks to get through to someone, anyone, but they never responded. Never even acted like they noticed anything different.
I had thought Kat would be different. We were connected. She would surely hear me. But since I got here, where I would have normally felt her was just a gaping hole of nothingness. Each day that passed with no response, it seemed to grow bigger and bigger. Maybe one day it would get big enough to swallow me up. Then at least I would be put out of my misery.
Shaking my head at the depressing thought, I moved to the mirror that overlooked her room and waited. I was going to get through to her. If it took days, weeks, or even years. I would get out of here if my name wasn’t Cheshire S. Cat!
